On April 3, 2019, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) held a propaganda workshop for monks from Menthang monastery in Chikdril county, Golok Tibet.

The Chinese government has formulated mainly control administrations of monasteries and people in Chikdril county, Golok Tibet to intensify restriction on monks.

As China continues with crackdowns on religious freedoms in Tibet, recently it is reportedly announced that more restrictions would take place with monks from monasteries in the Golok area and especially any comment on social media against the political view of CCP would be controlled and punishable.

In the end of May, A 26 year old monk from Chikdril County, Golok, Tibet was arrested allegedly on charges of commenting on the post of political information against the CCP law on social media. Following his arrest, the county executive and the head of United front work department came to the monastery criticizing old monks and prepared a political education program for about 100 monks there around ten days.

Later, government officials of the Golok area arrived at the monastery and the monastery management committee has announced a notification consisting of four points. The Chinese authorities have ordered that the monastery has to take serious actions about its management unlike before and especially to control social media for any comment against the political view of CCP and dismantling the unity of nationality. Not only monks, but also their families and neighbors were ordered to share this notification through social media platform groups.

According to a Wechat group talk received by the Tibet Times, a member of the management committee of the monastery notified, “I have nothing special to announce here, but again emphasize on the previous notification that we have shared widely, it is really important to listen and keep in mind. Otherwise, we also heard that one of our monks got punished recently. So, please keep sharing this notification to the groups. For these days, authorities may come door to door and inspect everyone. I urge you all to be careful and share this with all.”

Despite the monastery management officials taking over the finance, security and daily activities of monks, the Chinese authorities ordered the related officials to take more steps to control since it is not yet enough. In addition, the monastery was warned if the monastery will not use the open land accordingly, then the government will seize it.

Note: Names of the monk and the monastery are not mentioned here at the request of the information source.
