On March 14th, 2008, tentions exploded in Lhasa with as many as 20,000 Tibetans taking to the streets in protest Chinese rule. Tibetans attacked symbols of state power, including police cars, government buildings, Chinese flags, and Chinese-owned businesses. As many as 100 Tibetans were reported to have been killed by Chinese security forces. According to Chinese state media, 18 Chinese civilians were killed.
