The Labrang TashiKyil Monastery in Amdo, Tibet

Following the Chinese government’s latest arbitrary arrest of Venerable Jamyang Tashi, his current whereabouts and well-being remain unknown.

In February 2026, Chinese authorities once again arrested and forcibly abducted Ven. Jamyang Tashi, a monk from Labrang Tashikyil Monastery in Sangchu County, Tibet. The precise grounds for his arrest and his current physical well-being remain unknown. Last year, he was held in custody for six months on suspicion of communicating with Tibetans in exile.

According to the information published by the  Dharamshala-based research group Tibet Watch, following his six-month detention, Ven.Jamyang Tashi was abruptly transferred by Chinese authorities to a hospital in Labrang without explanation before being moved to Sangchu County. Although his relatives requested to see him, authorities strictly denied them access. Under such intense restrictions, the monk’s current condition and exact whereabouts remain entirely unknown.

Inquiries conducted by our reporter with Tibetan residents in the locality of Labrang Tashikyil Monastery revealed that the monk had abruptly disappeared without a trace. His current location remains unknown. Furthermore, authorities continue to enforce a strict clampdown throughout the region, leaving numerous politically related developments highly unclear.

Last October, Chinese authorities raided the Labrang Tashikyil Monastery and several surrounding monastic communities, declaring the display of the Dalai Lama’s photo illegal. After confiscating four large bags of portraits, the Chinese government has continued to maintain strict surveillance and crack down on the monastery’s monks through both direct and indirect means.
