A powerful earthquake struck the town of Shelkar in Dingri County, as well as parts of Ngamring County and Lha Tse County in Tibet, causing widespread devastation. The disaster has left at least 95 people dead and inflicted severe damage to property, leaving communities reeling from its impact.

A powerful earthquake, measuring nearly 7 on the Richter scale, struck the Tibetan regions of Dingri County, Ngamrim County, and Lha Tse County this morning, January 7. The quake has caused extensive loss of life and property, with Dingri County bearing the brunt of the devastation. Numerous houses have collapsed, highways have been destroyed, and the region is grappling with severe damage.

Tremors from the earthquake were also felt in neighbouring countries, including India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. According to the latest reports, the disaster has claimed 95 lives and left 70 others injured.

A reliable source of the Tibet Times, in a written dispatch, describes “A powerful earthquake struck Counties in Tibet, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Many houses have collapsed, and numerous people have been killed or injured in the affected areas, including Shelkar, Tsogo, and Dangso in Dingri County. Among the hardest-hit locations, Shelkar Town in Dingri has suffered severe devastation. Due to the widespread destruction, assessing the full extent of the damage remains challenging at this time.”

Videos circulating on social media depict widespread devastation in the county. Numerous houses have collapsed, animals lie dead, highways are buried under rubble, and people can be seen running for cover or desperately digging through the debris. In one video, heart-wrenching scenes unfold as people cry in the background of a collapsed house in a town in Dingri County.

As this is developing news, new information will updated as soon as it becomes available.
