Losel, a monk from Sera Monastery, has died while in custody in a Chinese prison. Reports indicate that he suffered prolonged physical beatings and medical neglect before his death.

Sera Monastery, one of Tibet’s significant Buddhist monastic institutions

On October 21st, a local Tibetan source informed Tibet Times that Losel, a Tibetan monk from Sera Thekchen Ling Monastery, was arrested in May 2024. He was suspected of communicating with individuals outside of Tibet and gathering and sharing information from within the region.

While in prison, Losel became chronically ill due to the beatings he endured. Despite his deteriorating condition, he was denied medical care and assistance. Ultimately he passed away in the detention facility.

The same source describes, “ After Losel was arrested, his family members did not know where he was imprisoned or whether he was alive or not. However, on 21st October, the Lhasa Chinese Police delivered his dead body to his family members in Lhasa.” This marked the first confirmation of his death.

Losel, a native of Tsotoe Village in Phenpo, near Lhasa, was ordained as a child at Sera Monastery, one of Tibet’s significant Buddhist monastic institutions. He was 38 years old.
