Many Tibetans staged a protest in front of the Public Hall of Derge County in Tibet against constructing a new dam on the Yangtze River and the relocation of local people.
The Chinese authorities initiated the construction of a new dam on the Yangtze River and will force people to relocate. On 14 February 2024, hundreds of people from six monasteries and about 25 villages gathered in front of the public hall of Derge County, protesting against the construction of a new dam and relocation project. People requested that the involved authorities stop working on the project.
A concerned Tibetan informed Tibet Times, “Over the past few years, the Chinese authorities have initiated a project to construct a new dam and powerhouse in Wonbodo township of Derge county and ordered the relocation of the local monasteries and villages.”
The source added, “The local people gathered in front of the public hall of Derge County protesting against the project of constructing a new dam on the Yangtze River; for that project, the Chinese authorities ordered the relocation of six local monasteries and about 25 villages.”
Despite the Tibet Times making an effort to get more information about this protest, due to restrictions, it is hard to obtain detailed information more than the fact that a protest did take place.
