Gonpo Kyi and her husband, Choekyong have been arrested for appealing a retrial of unfair imprisonment to the renowned Tibetan businessman, Dorjee Tashi.

During a protest in front of Lhasa intermediate People’s court to appeal a retrial for Dorjee Tashi’s unfair imprisonment and to visit him, they were arrested by the Chinese police.

According to the reliable source of Tibet Times, “Today, during a peaceful protest by Gonpo kyi and Choekyong, a group of Chinese policemen came and arrested them. Gonpo Kyi was alone arrested before this time and released, but this time she has been arrested with her husband. Currently, where they have been detained and whether they will be released or not, remain unknown.”

Gonpo Kyi continued protesting since 2022 through different ways such as by prostration in front of Lhasa intermediate people’s court and Drapchi prison for her brother Dorjee Tashi’s unfair imprisonment and to visit him. On May 10 of this year, she was forcibly taken away by a group of policemen and later released to her residence. She was warned that she and her brother Dorjee Tsedan will be arrested if she continues to protest.

Tibetan businessman Dorjee Tashi was sentenced to life imprisonment through a secret trial in 2010. After serving 10 years in prison, his lawyer and family members appealed to higher authorities repeatedly for a fair trial and revision of the court case but proved no result. Therefore, since October of last year, his elder sister Gonpo Kyi and younger brother Dorjee Tsedan have been protesting spontaneously in front of Lhasa intermediate people’s court and police officials often interrogated and threatened them to discourage future demonstrations.
